About
GutCheck Stratton is an endurance race which blends running and mountain biking with orienteering and navigation. Each year the race course is different — and no one knows exactly what it will be until minutes before the race. Race solo or form a team of up to four athletes (everyone races the entire course together). The objective is to use your wits and fitness to find your way to the finish ahead of the pack.
Warning!

This is a race for athletes with some endurance experience and a moderate level of fitness or better. Expect steep running and biking trails.  While there will be emergency medical support on-site, all participants race at their own risk.

The Course

The 2026 event will involve trail running and uphill mountain biking. Participants race from checkpoint to checkpoint, using their own wits — and a map provided shortly before race start.

Teams must check in at all checkpoints and the finish line together. Segments will be categorized as either a run, or a bike discipline. Keep in mind that you may have multiple running and biking legs that alternate throughout the race. Also, unlike a relay, 2, 3 or 4-person teams compete together the entire race. This is a point-to-point race, there is no central transition area so plan accordingly.

How it will work:

Until shortly before the race, all you’ll know about GutCheck Stratton is that it will combine running, cycling, and navigating inside the Stratton Mountain Resort. You will present yourself at designated checkpoints along the way. Expect a finishing time of 2.5 to 4 hours. Whether you compete solo or with a group of your friends (2, 3 or 4 persons), the objective is to use your wits and fitness to scramble your way (including up a mountain!) to the finish.

USAT Sanctioned Event

This is a USAT Sanctioned race! That means that we meet or exceed strict guidelines set by USA Triathlon. This benefits the athlete by providing additional insurance coverage in case of injury.

You are required to have either an annual or 1-day (Bronze) USA Triathlon membership in order to race in any USAT-sanctioned event. Non-USAT members will be required to purchase a one-day event insurance license from USA Triathlon for $14.99. For more information about USAT memberships please click here.

Results will count toward national and regional rankings. All USAT rules and regulations will apply. Racers are subject to time penalties or disqualification for infractions of USAT rules included a positive drug test.

You will be given an opportunity to purchase a USAT membership during the registration process, or using the grey 'Add' button at the bottom of your registration email.

How should I prepare?

Prepare yourself for this event by training to be capable of running and mountain biking for up to four hours. Hill climbing by both bike and foot are an essential part of this race — but don’t worry, there are plenty of downhill stretches too! There are four race categories: solo, two-person, three-person and four-person. All members of a team must remain in close contact and finish at the same time.

Packet Pickup and Late Registration

Packet pick-up and late registration (if not sold out) will be 4:30 - 6:00pm Friday evening at Stratton Mountain (location TBD) and 7:30 - 8:30 am Saturday at Stratton Mountain (location TBD) . All participants MUST BRING a photo ID and proof of USAT purchase (physical card, digital card, receipt, email confirmation).

You will NOT be able to pick up packets for others! All team members must be present to pickup their race packet.

Distances

Be prepared to:

Mountain Bike (steep hills) 5 - 10 miles

Run (technical trails) 4 - 6 miles

Porters

Each athlete should register a friend or family member to serve as their support porter during the race. Duties are relatively light; including taking away your bike/helmet at certain stages of the race; and/or transporting the bike by car from one point to another. All porters receive the post-race meal along with you. One person can porter for up to two athletes.

What to Bring

Running gear, mountain bike with helmet, sunscreen, protective eyewear. While nutrition and hydration will be provided at checkpoints of the race, you would be best served to have some on your bike. Most racers will also wear hydration belts or vests.

Racing as a Team

The first person to register for a team will be designated team captain. Teams range from 2 athletes to 4 and can be “added to” as race day approaches.  All other team members must use the unique registration link found in the Team Captain's athlete account in order to join the team. Directions to add team members and change your team name are included in your registration email.

On race day, each member of the team must go through all checkpoints and the finish line together. May the fastest... and smartest... teams win!

Timing
