Part of the RACE-MANIA Summit and Expo line-up of clinics and workshops, this 60-minute workshop has two parts. The first will discuss the facts and fallacies of heart health and endurance athletes. The second part of the workshop will focus on performance testing with demonstration of VO2 max testing and how it can be used to measure and improve performance.

What you will learn

This session is for all athletes looking to increase fitness safely and effectively while interested the optimization of performance through with VO2 max testing. Attendees will learn:
  • Up-to-date scientific information regarding heart and hemodynamic changes that are seen in athletes
  • How to take care of the athletic heart
  • What a VO2 test is and how it can be used to measure and improve performance

About the instructors

Dr. Brian Bilchik, Medical Director and Director of Sports Cardiology at the Lown Cardiovascular Group.  Faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Bilchik has more than 20 years of clinical experience in taking care of athletes with cardiac concerns and has a focus on prevention, screening for participation, and performance evaluation.  

Kristian Bakken, Nurse Practitioner, has 13 years of combined cardiology experience from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. His professional interests include cardiopulmonary exercise physiology and teaching.
