Sydney, the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major, starts on Miller Street in North Sydney and spends its first three kilometres earning the view. You cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge between 2km and 3km, on the biggest descent of the day, harbour opening on both sides.
The middle is honest work. Through the CBD, then a long, wide, straight run down Anzac Parade from roughly 16km to 28km, where crowds thin and the race goes quiet. A single rolling loop of Centennial Park lands around 30km to 34km, right as the legs start arguing.
The sting is late: a climb on Art Gallery Road near Mrs Macquarie's Chair around 40km, then a drop down Macquarie Street into the Opera House forecourt.
Total gain is 313 metres over 42.195km, net 83 metres downhill, seven-hour cutoff. Scenic at both ends, a grind in the middle, and a finish line worth the last hill.
