Few races feel like Berlin. Runners gather near the Brandenburg Gate on the last weekend of September, then set off on a flat, fast loop through neighborhoods like Charlottenburg, Mitte, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, and Schöneberg. The course is built for speed: 13 world records have fallen on its pavement, more than at any other marathon, including Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 in 2022 and Tigist Assefa's 2:11:53 in 2023.
What stays with most runners is the atmosphere. Organizers describe millions of spectators and 80 live bands lining the route, turning the course into a moving street festival. The field is massive; 54,062 runners finished in 2024.
The payoff comes in the final stretch. After hours of city streets, runners turn toward the Brandenburg Gate, pass beneath its columns, and cross the finish line at one of Europe's most recognizable landmarks. As one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, Berlin is a bucket-list race.
